Yes, football scandal is here again. Match-fixing is back.
When is this going to end? Hard to say. Nobody can tell. It looks like it never will.
“Malaysian football will not rise again by going back to a semi-pro format.” Says Sultan Ahmad Shah, the FAM president. I agree. No format will save it.
Sultan Ahmad Shah also believes that corruption is a disease that affects all sectors. I agree too.
Mediocrity does not belong to football only. Other sectors too are mired in mediocrity. Education included.
Football is just a manisfestation of what is not right in our society.
I was a football fan - a Pahang fan. I was a regular at the Darulmakmur Stadium in the 70s dan early 80s (except when I was in UK). I was at the Merdeka Stadium in 1983 when Pahang beat Selangor to win the Malaysia Cup for the first time. I knew all the players’ names, then.
But today I don’t even know who coaches the team.
Malaysian football is in the doldrums and will remain so for a very long time to come. There is nothing much that can be done. There is not much hope. No experts in the world can save it.
There are many reasons for this. But the biggest of all is the people themselves. What can be done about this? Nothing. Almost nothing.
Football in England is more than just a game. It is almost a way of life – almost a religion if you can call it. If people say “religion is the opium of the people” I would not agree. But football almost becomes an opium to the British people – at least to the working class.
The British play football more than just for fun. It is more than just a means to earn a living. It has some higher or noble purposes. It is a tool to inspire people. It provides useful lessons for life. It is a tool to educate society. The footballers (except a few bad apples) become a role model to society especially to the young ones.
Can the same be said about our football? Can the same be said about our footballers? Are they a role model worth emulating?
You know as much as I do - no. To most of our players, football is just a way to make money, in some cases fast money. And to gain fame and popularity. Not much else.
For anything to survive and thrive, it has to have some noble purpose or at least must be free from vested interests. The former hardly exists, while there is plenty of the latter.
So, I think it is better we forget about football in this country. Play football for fun, yes. Play among ourselves to create unity, yes. But don’t expect more. But don’t expect to compete in a tournament and win. Forget all those cups. Better not to waste time or money.
Football does us one great service though. It is a mirror and a barometer of our society. If we can learn something from this, not every sen spent so far has gone to waste.
